The "beast" is actually a downed pilot who parachuted out of his plane and got caught on top of the mountain. I know this because "There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky;...a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute," and the light was obviously a plane that got shot down and the figure was its pilot.
What the beast actually is is a man who parachuted out of a plane, which, most likely, got shot down, that was flying over the island. "There was a sudden bright explosion and a corkscrew trail across the sky..." (LORD OF THE FLIES). This quote proves that the plane was most likely shot down. "...a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute..." (LORD OF THE FLIES). This proves that the beast is only a man with a parachute. The man is most likely dead, but his parachute carried him over to the mountain on the island. So, technically, the beast is not actually a beast, but a man who fell out of a plane that had been shot.
